'Run the Greenway' event causes Dulles Greenway closures

Here's what exits will be closed and when you can access them again.

VIRGINIA, USA — Thousands of runners will speed down the Dulles Greenway Saturday. It's part of the first-ever "Run the Greenway" 5K, 10K and Kids Fun Run race, hosted by the Dulles Greenway.

The event celebrates 25 years of the privately-owned toll road connecting Loudoun County to metropolitan D.C.

But, drivers, you may need to make a detour. A westbound stretch between Route 28 and Exit 6 at Ashburn Village Road is closed to accommodate the event. The road was shut down at 3 a.m. and will re-open at about 2 p.m.

Unlike most athletic events of this past year, "Run the Greenway" is taking place live and in-person. But COVID-19 precautions are still visible, according to the event's website.

Masks are required at the start and finish line, but not while running. The number of runners participating was capped at 1,250, and they are starting in groups of 100, according to the site.
