DC man indicted on charges stemming from deadly hit-and-run outside the White House

He is set to be arraigned on April 29, 2024, at a hearing before a Superior Court judge.

WASHINGTON — A 33-year-old D.C. man was indicted Wednesday for striking and killing a man while fleeing from the United States Secret Service in July of 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

The indictment stems from when Benjamin Robertson fled a traffic stop on July 12 and killed 75-year-old Bing Wong and injured a 13-year-old girl. This happened just before 1:30 p.m. that day when Secret Service attempted to stop Robertson's vehicle at the intersection of 17th Street Northwest and Constitution Avenue Northwest for an expired registration.

Investigators claim the suspect made it seem like they would pull over but then quickly fled south on 17th Street. This is when the suspect went through a red light and struck multiple people in the crosswalk, according to the Secret Service.

He was later identified as Robertson and arrested on July 27 by the United States Park Police.

According to DOJ, Robertson was indicted by a grand jury in the Superior Court of the D.C. on second-degree murder of a senior citizen, assault with a dangerous weapon committed against a minor, fleeing a law enforcement officer, tampering with physical evidence, and destroying property.

He is set to be arraigned on April 29, 2024, at a hearing before a Superior Court judge.
