1 dead in single-vehicle crash on Rt. 124 in Montgomery County

Investigators say the driver struck a utility pole.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Route 124 in Gaithersburg, Md. Wednesday morning, Montgomery County Police said.

The collision happened in the area of Woodfield Road and Garfield Drive on Route 124 around 5:04 a.m., police said. Montgomery County Police and Collision Reconstruction Units responded to the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates that a 1998 Honda Civic was traveling south on Woodfield Road when, for reasons still under investigation, the car crossed the northbound lanes, left the road and struck a utility pole.

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Ivan Jose Garcia Umanzor, of Olney, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the crash. Anyone with information about the crash can call the unit at 240-773-6620.
