Local emergency declared in Culpeper Co., Va. for flooding

The Culpeper County Sheriff's Office took to Twitter on Friday to advise the public to stay off the roads and to not drive through standing or moving water.

CULPEPER COUNTY, VA -- A local emergency was declared in Culpeper County, Va. on Friday after many roads were closed due to flooding and high waters.

The sheriff's office tweeted a photo of cars being submerged in water on Monumental Mills Road in Culpeper County.

One community that was hit particularly hard was Rapidan, Virginia. The community is located next the Rapidan River, which is in major flood stage near Culpeper according to the National Weather Service.

Floodwaters in Rapidan surrounded homes, a church and farmland.

Rapidan resident Justin Leary, 21, said he had never seen flooding to the extent that he saw Friday.

“The cleanup is going to be absolutely horrible,” he said.
