Officer indicted for reportedly hitting man with squad car, leaving him at hospital with broken leg

Prince George's County's Dexter Shin was indicted on one count of misconduct in office and placed on administrative duty.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — A Prince George’s County Police officer was indicted Thursday for allegedly hitting an 80-year-old man with his patrol car, driving him to an area hospital, and leaving near a locked entrance with a broken leg in early March.

Dexter Shin has been indicted on one count of misconduct in office and placed on administrative duty pending litigation, according to State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy’s office.

In a press conference, Braveboy said the offending officer “certainly did not meet the standards that the department, or really, society has for any officer or any person.”

Braveboy said she believes the collision was an accident, but that Shin caused an injury and failed to get the victim proper medical aid, disobeying the general orders of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Proper procedures following the incident would have been to stay at the scene, alert an officer and call an ambulance for the victim, Braveboy said.

“The allegations against this officer are deeply disturbing and do not align with the ethical standards to which we hold our officers and do not represent the hardworking women and men of this agency," said Chief Malik Aziz in a press release. "If proven true, I would also advocate he be held accountable to the fullest extent possible in the administrative process."

Shin joined the Prince George's County Police in 2017 and is assigned to the Bureau of Patrol. He will remain suspended pending the outcome of the indictment.
