LIST: How to stay cool during extreme heat in the DMV

D.C. is under a heat emergency for extreme heat Thursday, August 4.

WASHINGTON — Temperatures will climb quickly Thursday before reaching the mid-90s throughout the afternoon. With high humidity, temperatures will feel like 99-106 degrees.

A Heat Advisory has been issued Thursday for parts of the DMV where the heat index will approach 106 degrees.

Additionally, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has activated the District's Heat Emergency plan for Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m.

According to a tweet from the Prince William County government, those who need to take a break from the heat can visit the two cooling stations.

  • Pat White Center at Ben Lomond located at 10501 Copeland Dr, Manassas, Virginia is open from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. 
  • Veterans Memorial Park Community Center located at 14300 Veterans Drive in Woodbridge, Virginia s open from 2 p.m.–6 p.m.

Loudoun County

Cooling centers are offered at library branches, recreation centers and an animal services facility, according to a press release published on Saturday.

Library branches

  • Ashburn, Brambleton, Purcellville and Sterling are open from noon to 8 p.m.
  • Cascades, Gum Spring and Rust branches are open from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Lovettsville and Middleburg branches are closed. The Law Library is closed as well, according to the release.

Recreation Centers

  • Dulles South Recreation Center and Claude Moore Recreation Center are open from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Sundays, according to the release.

Animal Service Facility

Loudoun County's Animal Shelter, located at 42225 Adoption Drive in Leesburg, Virginia is open and is providing heat relief for animals. It is open from 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. 

Maryland

Prince George's County

In Prince George's County, multiple cooling centers are available for the public to use as the heat wave continues. Check out the County's interactive map that shows where you can stay cool on one of the summer's hottest days.

Montgomery County

According to a tweet from Montgomery County, anyone who needs to take a break from the eat can visit a cooling center in any Montgomery Co. library branch, pool or recreation center.

Howard County

Are you in Howard County and looking for a place to cool off? Well, there are multiple places that offer cooling stations, according to a press release published on Thursday. 

Residents can visit one of the County's community centers, library branches or 50+ centers.
