Airport in DMV ranks among top 5 most expensive in the nation

Some airports cost more than others to fly out of. Can you guess which airports in the country are the most expensive?

WASHINGTON — Air travel in the U.S. is getting more and more expensive, and we can definitely feel it in the DMV.

While air travel costs appear to have reached historic heights, due to high fuel costs and other factors, when you account for inflation, the cost of air travel has actually gone down over the last decade, according to USA Facts

But that doesn't make us feel any better, does it?

Some airports cost more than others. Can you guess which airports in the country are the most expensive?

USA Facts says that the average domestic airline fares are influenced by the most common flight routes, seat types and airlines for each airport, as well as regional differences in expenses.

It turns out that one of the most expensive airports to fly out of in the country is right here in the DMV. Now keep in mind, these are ranked out of the top 50 busiest airports in the United States, so it's not every airport in the country.

"Of the top 50 busiest airports in the U.S. by the number of passengers, Washington Dulles International Airport in [Dulles, Virginia] was the most expensive to fly out of, with an average domestic airfare from April to June 2022 of $525.70," according to USA Facts.

  1. Dulles International (IAD) – $525.70
  2. San Francisco International (SFO) – $498.55
  3. Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) – $452.24
  4. Los Angeles International (LAX) – $447.52
  5. Portland International (PDX) – $442.96

And just in case you wanted to feel worse about your local airport's prices, here are the least expensive airports to fly out of, according to USA Facts:

  2. Harry Reid International (formerly McCarran International) (LAS) – $289.61
  3. Orlando International (MCO) – $292.35

  5. Chicago Midway International (MDW) – $318.70
