Report ranks safest cars for teens behind the wheel

Memorial Day begins what's known as the 100 deadliest days for young drivers.

WASHINGTON — Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and a busy time out on our roads. It also marks the start of what's called the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers behind the wheel.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, police report a drastic increase in the number of serious or deadly crashes involving young drivers. That's why the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in Virginia, and Consumer Reports teamed up to create a list of new and used cars that are safest for young drivers.

The list includes 58 used cars ranging in price from $5,800 to almost $20,000. If you're able to spend more, the report includes 22 new cars recommended for teen drivers ranging from $23,000 to almost $40,000.

“Vehicles continue to get safer, and for the first time since the pandemic-era disruptions, prices on the new and used market have stabilized,” said Jennifer Stockburger, director of operations at CR’s Auto Test Center. “These trends have enabled us to point families to even better options this year.”

Cars like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Sonata all made the list.
