GREATER LANDOVER, Md. — The Federal Express Corporation has ended its naming rights agreement with the Washington Commanders. The team's home stadium has been known as FedExField since 1999.
The move confirmed Wednesday comes two years prior to the expiration of the current agreement scheduled for 2026, and as the NFL club under new ownership looks for a site on which to build a new stadium that would open later this decade.
"FedEx is a longtime sponsor of multiple sports leagues, properties, and teams. We continuously review our marketing programs to ensure our investments are aligned with our evolving business objectives. As part of this review, we have decided to not continue as the naming rights sponsor of FedExField as we focus on our broader NFL sponsorship and opportunities that reflect our global footprint. We believe the future is bright for the Washington Commanders, and we look forward to watching the team evolve under their new ownership,” FedEx said in a statement to WUSA9.
The announcement comes a day after the team announced $78 million in improvements to the field. That money will go toward infrastructure improvements, and upgrades to food, drink, parking and fan spaces.
“We have already started the process of identifying our next stadium naming rights partner — a partner who will play a crucial role in ushering in the next era of not only Commanders football but also a robust slate of top live events and concerts,” the team said in a statement.
The announcement comes even as the ownership group led by Josh Harris looks for a new home for the team.
In an exclusive interview with WUSA9 Sports Director Chick Hernandez, Harris confirmed he and his team are actively moving forward with plans for a new Commanders stadium and revealed he his advisors have identified three sites.
“We’re studying where would our new home be,” Harris said. “We continue to look at sites in three jurisdictions. We’ll have a lot more to say about that in the coming months. It’s very complicated in the sense that each site has its own nuances in terms of the politics, the site itself, is it good for football, what do you do to the area, how do you do it, and so all that stuff is ongoing so we’re working hard.”
Sources confirmed to WUSA9 the three proposed sites are in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Harris' team would not disclose the specific location of those three sites, but sources told WUSA9 the fan favorite in D.C. — the old RFK Stadium — is the location they are considering in the District.
The U.S. House of Representatives later Wednesday was scheduled to vote on a bill that would transfer the land currently occupied by the husk of RFK Stadium from the federal government to the District. The bill says, “The city could use the land for stadium development, residential and commercial development, recreational facilities and open space.”
