Neighbors shaken after 2 shot dead in Silver Spring park

Residents are concerned after deadly violence at a neighborhood park.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Officers with Montgomery County are investigating a shooting in Silver Spring.

Police say calls came in just before 7 p.m. Sunday for reports of gunshots. When officers arrived at the 500 block of Thayer Avenue, they located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the Nolte Local Park.

During a press conference police said both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. They were later identified as Quincy Johnson of Takoma Park, Maryland, and D'Andre Wint of Lanham.

On Monday, neighbors told WUSA9 a group of young men were playing basketball in the park when the shots were fired. One witness said one of the men shot was found laying on the court.

"Two young people are dead. They are gone. It's a problem," the witness said.

Residents in the area say they are still processing that their neighborhood park was the scene of a homicide investigation.

The witness, who is a father, said safety is top of mind.

"I'm very concerned. It's more than a big concern because I'm asking myself about my own security and the security of my children," he said.

No one has been taken into custody for the shooting. Anyone who may have information that would help investigators is asked to call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS.
