Man sentenced to 65 years in prison for pair of Rockville stabbings

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A 33-year-old has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for a pair of stabbings in Montgomery County, one of which ended a man's life.

The stabbings happened on Sept. 3, 2022 on Hungerford Drive in Rockville. Officers with the Rockville City Police and Montgomery County Police Department responded to the area just before 10 p.m. for the report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from a stab wound who was able to provide a suspect description. The victim was taken to a hospital, treated, and released.

Officers were able to locate Scorpio Alexander Stanfield, the person of interest at the time, in the area and he was arrested.

While investigating the crime scene, officers found a man seated in his vehicle suffering from a stab wound. He was later identified as Jonathan Lawrence Moore. He was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.

On May 25, 2023, a jury convicted Stanfield second-degree murder for the death of 35-year-old Moore of Silver Spring. On May 22, 2023, a separate jury convicted Stanfield of first-degree assault for the non-fatal stabbing of the other victim.

On Friday, Stanfield received his prison sentence in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County.

“This defendant is responsible for terrifying attacks, stabbing people at random on a Rockville street. We are grateful to Assistant State’s Attorneys Lauren Turner and Gabriel Carrera for the successful prosecution of two separate jury trials. The judge has imposed the maximum sentence in this matter, which will ensure the defendant is not able to harm anyone else,” said Lauren DeMarco, spokesperson for the State’s Attorney’s Office.
