First responders helped the man, who was later taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A Maryland man is facing charges after police say he tried to kill another man on New Year's Day.

According to the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD), officers were called to the 8500 block of 16th Street in Silver Spring just after 6 p.m. on Jan. 1 to investigate a possible shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot in the area. First responders helped the man, who was later taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

MCPD believes 28-year-old Maurice Ricks and the man got into an argument before Ricks took out a gun and shot him. There is no word on what the two men may have been fighting about before the shooting happened.

Ricks was arrested on Jan. 13 and charged with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and use of firearm in the commission of a violent felony.
