LAUREL, Md. — A man is dead and a driver has been arrested after a crash in Laurel, Maryland, over the weekend.

Laurel Police Department officers were called to the 7800 block of Contee Road, near the Aventura at Contee Crossing apartments, around 4 a.m. on Sunday. Once on scene, officers saw a man in the road suffering from severe injuries. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital for treatment. He died two days later. Police have identified him as 32-year-old Jonathan Rocha Diaz of Alexandria, Virginia.

The driver of the striking vehicle stayed on scene. He was identified as 32-year-old Terrence A. Savoy of Laurel. Savoy was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to police. The police department is working with the Prince George's County States Attorney's Office to determine what further charges will be filed.

On Saturday night, family and friends celebrated his life.

"He was my best friend. There was not a thing he did not know." His sister, Beatriz Diaz said.

Rocha Diaz leaves behind two children ages six and 10.

"He always had plans to do something. So many dreams. At the age of 32 he lived such a full life. He had two wonderful kids who I call my nephews," Diaz said.
