Reston man, 21, charged with attempted murder after allegedly stealing car and hitting Virginia State Police cruiser

Troopers took the driver into custody shortly after the crash.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. — A 21-year-old Reston man faces a multitude of charges, including attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, after leading Virginia State Police troopers on a pursuit Thursday night in what police believe was a stolen car.

Abiselome Belachew, 21, of Reston, has been charged with attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, hit-and-run (of the trooper's vehicle), eluding police, auto theft and driving on a suspended license.

According to Virginia State Police, troopers were notified of a stolen vehicle -- a 2015 Chevrolet -- traveling south on I-495 near the American Legion Bridge around 10:45 p.m. Thursday.

When a trooper activated lights and sirens in an effort to get the driver to pull over, they did not. Belachew sped away and troopers gave chase.

The pursuit continued through the Mixing Bowl in Springfield, where the wanted driver struck a VSP cruiser, and sent it into a Jersey wall. Police said the trooper sustained minor injuries.

A short time later, the driver's vehicle was brought to a stop in the northbound lanes of I-395, near the Glebe Rd. exit.

Police said Belachew crawled into the trunk of the car to try to hide from troopers, but was eventually taken into custody without incident.

Lanes of I-395 were blocked for the crash investigation, but have since reopened.
