Kayaker finds body thought to be missing swimmer in Potomac River

Authorities are now conducting a death investigation.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Authorities in Montgomery County say a body has been found after a swimmer went missing in the Potomac River on Friday. Crews searched for the missing 18-year-old over the weekend. On Monday morning, a kayaker found a body in the water near Great Falls. Pete Piringer, a spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, said the body is presumed to be the missing swimmer.

Rescue crews say they are now conducting a death investigation related to the body recovery. The identity of the body found has not yet been made public.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, crews were called to the Potomac River near the Anglers Inn River Access for reports of a missing swimmer just before 8:45 p.m. and halted the mission right after 11 p.m. Friday.

When crews arrived, a witness told them a group of people were swimming from the Virginia side of the river to the Maryland side, when one of the swimmers went underwater and never came back up.
