Student charged with gun possession at school

Police say a Paint Branch High School student was discovered with a handgun on campus Tuesday.

BURTONSVILLE, Md. — A 16-year-old student has been charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, underage possession of a firearm and other related charges, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD).

Officers responded to Paint Branch High School just after 10 a.m. Tuesday after a teacher notified security that they saw what appeared to be a gun on a student, according to a press release.

The student agreed to be searched, and officers say they found a Smith & Wesson handgun in their possession.

The student is reportedly awaiting a bond hearing and will be charged as an adult.

It is not yet known how the student acquired the gun.
