George Washington University makes changes to inauguration week celebration citing 'global tensions'

Several events have been canceled and rescheduled.

WASHINGTON — George Washington University modified some of its planned events for the inauguration of new university president Ellen M. Granberg citing "ongoing global tensions."

In an update to the community, the university shared what changes had been made.

"In light of ongoing global tensions and their impact on our community, some of this week’s activities to celebrate the installation of President Granberg will be modified, postponed, or canceled," the university said.

The university said the changes were made to focus on supporting the community. Here are the changes that were made:

Welcome Center

Due to the reduced schedule of public events, the Welcome Center will no longer be in place in the Great Hall of the University Student Center. We will provide guidance about obtaining event credentials directly to in-person guests.

Celebrating GW: A Symposium on the Impact of Academic Excellence

The symposium will no longer be a public event. We will contact program participants and members of the faculty who will attend in person.

Student Celebration Kickoff: The REVelry

This event is canceled this year.

Investiture Ceremony

The investiture will no longer be a public event. This event is now open only to program participants and invited guests; those who registered should watch via live stream unless contacted directly about attending in person. The event will be live streamed for the entire community to watch on Friday at 11 a.m. on the homepage of this site.

Raise Higher Together Block Party

This event will be rescheduled at a later date.
