Southeast DC shooting leaves man dead

The man killed has since been identified as 26-year-old Dionte Claytor, of Southeast.

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating after a man was shot to death in Southeast D.C. Sunday night.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened around 11 p.m. in the 3000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Southeast.

Officers in the area reported hearing gunshots and seeing a vehicle fleeing the area. When they went to investigate, officers found a man suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to an area hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The man killed has since been identified as 26-year-old Dionte Claytor, of Southeast.

Police have not said anything regarding a suspect description or possible motive behind the shooting at this time.

So far this year, MPD has reported 252 homicides in D.C. That is a 32% increase from the same time last year. In 2023, a total of 203 homicides were reported the entire year. Violent crime is up 40%, according to MPD crime stats.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at (202) 727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for each homicide committed in the District of Columbia.

The shooting occurred in Southeast D.C. at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
