WASHINGTON — The battery of an e-bike sparked a house fire in Southeast D.C. Wednesday displacing the family that lived in the home.

According to DC Fire and EMS, crews were called to a 2-story end row house along 16th Street, Southeast just before 8 p.m. for a fire on the first floor.

Residents were alerted to the fire by the smoke alarms. DC Fire and EMS says the residents then noticed e-bike batteries sparking on top of the refrigerator.

The HAZMAT Unit will be in charge of securing and disposing the batteries.

The Red Cross has been called to help the family of four that was displaced by the fire.
