Fundraiser for family of boy killed at Brookland Metro station reaches goal

Police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON — The person wanted in the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy at a Metro station last week has been arrested, and a fundraiser has reached its goal to help the victim's family.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was developed to help cover the funeral costs of Avion Evans, who was shot and killed inside Brookland-CUA Metro station in Northeast D.C. on Thursday evening. The fundraiser, which has only been posted for two days, reached its goal of $7,000 just before 3 a.m. Tuesday.

The page was created by his parents India Wells and John Evans. The description goes on to describe their 14-year-old, "I am asking everyone if they can please donate to my son for funeral cost. Our Avion was very smart, intelligent, loved to debate, he was funny, computer graphics, great game editor, running track and a host of other things. We want to remember him as the sweet loving kid that he was. His spirit is here every step of the way."

As of early Tuesday afternoon the total continues to climb with 156 donations and a total of $7,642 raised.

Police continue to search for the person responsible for the crime. The suspect was captured on surveillance footage within a Metro station. If anyone recognizes the individual they are asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
