'Day of Play at RFK' provides free community activities for thousands of DC kids

Thousands of DC Public School students are on spring break this week. Events DC invited them for a day of activities to make sure they stay occupied and busy.

WASHINGTON — Events DC, the organizers of the 3rd annual Day of Play at RFK, say thousands of DC Public School kids spent Tuesday partaking in free activities during spring break week.

There was something for everyone, including a bounce house, foam pit, and sidewalk chalk.

Among the D.C. sports teams that came to the event was the Washington Mystics, fresh off of the WNBA Draft. Forward Myisha Hines-Allen, who is in her seventh season in the District, says it's a great way to be out in the city she plays in.

"It’s definitely important for us to be out here in the community so they can see us as professional athletes doing what they aspire to do," she explained.

Wilma Wright, who lives in Congress Heights, says she brings her 6-year-old daughter Isabel every year because it is such a great event during spring break.

Jerrod Worthington agreed. He brought his 7-year-old son Kenzo and his friend King. He thinks the day is important because it shows investment in city kids.

"It gives them something to do, get them interacting with other people, being social," he said. "That’s what most of the kids need nowadays cause a lot of kids stuck in the house with all the violence and crime going on."

Charlina McBride brought her two kids because she says it gets them out of the house and with other kids.

"It teaches them self-discipline and to interact with other children as well," she said.

Organizers emphasize the importance of the day being free for anyone who registered ahead of time.
