American University student dies week after being hit by a car

Kenneth Clarke, 19, was struck by a car on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) — An American University student died Friday morning from a severe traumatic brain injury and brain bleeding after being hit by a car last week.

Kenneth Clarke, 19, was at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Western Avenue next to the Friendship Heights metro stop late at night on Tuesday, March 27 when he was struck by the car, American's student newspaper The Eagle reported.

According to American University, Clarke was a freshman studying international relations.

Fanta Aw, Vice President of Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence, said in an email to the student body:

"Kenneth is remembered for all he gave to the community around him. His death leaves a great emptiness for his family and friends who knew his genuine compassion and kindness, and who knew firsthand his deep faith and commitment to serving others. The tremendous outpouring of support for him and his family in recent days is a testimony to the powerful effect Kenneth had on our university community in his all too short time with us."

Clarke’s parents are pastors in the United Methodist Church, University chaplain Mark Schaefer told The Eagle.

A GoFundMe page set up to support the Clarke family raised over $30,000 in the week its been online.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 8 at 4 p.m. in the Kay Chapel on American University's campus.
