UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A Maryland man is being held without bond in Prince George's County for gun-related charges following a shooting in D.C. that left an off-duty police captain seriously injured.

Rasheed Thorne, 21, is the alleged driver of the blue car that prompted a police chase from D.C. to Prince George's County. According to investigators, Thorne and William Walker, 21, were fleeing from police after firing at the police captain in the District. The pursuit ended when the men crashed at the intersection of Landover Road and Dodge Park Road.

The public defender representing Thorne said he denies being the driver of the blue car that prompted the chase.

Thorne appeared virtually in court Wednesday afternoon facing misdemeanor charges for illegal possession of a firearm and for carrying a loaded handgun in a vehicle.

Prince George's County Police say a 9-mm semiautomatic gun was recovered from the scene of a crash. According to court documents, the officers that were pursuing the blue car witnessed the gun being thrown of the vehicle. Court documents did not specify who is suspected of discarding the gun.

Court documents indicate that Thorne was convicted last year for gun charges in the District.

Prince George's County prosecutors told the judge they plan to fully pursue with the gun-related charges. They also said a detainer has been issued for Thorne in D.C. in connection to the shooting.

D.C. Police say investigators are still trying to determine what prompted the shooting that left one of their own seriously injured. In court, Maryland prosecutors said they believe the police captain's eye was injured from shards of glass and not bullets.

Thorne's mother was in court Wednesday, telling the Maryland judge, "I would like him to be home so he can be a father for his son." She told WUSA9 that the 21-year-old is unemployed because he is focused on taking care of his 3-year-old son who he loves very much.

The public defender said Thorne lives in Glenarden with his mother, but court documents indicate that both suspects told officers they were homeless when they were arrested.

The office of Prince George's County state's attorney says the alleged passenger of the blue car, Walker, is expected to be in courtThursday. He is also facing gun-related misdemeanor charges.

WUSA9 has reached out to the office of D.C. State's Attorney Matthew Graves to determine whether the two men will be extradited to the District, but a spokesperson says she has no further information on the matter for now.
