New COVID variants emerge

Here's what you need to know to keep you and your loved ones healthy.

WASHINGTON — Health officials are warning the public as two new COVID variants nicknamed FLiRT have started to pop up. The new strains are sub-variants of the Omicron variant.

Symptoms of the new variants include sore throat, cough, fatigue, running nose, headache, muscle aches, fever, chills and difficulty breathing. The FLiRT strains have the same pattern as previous mutations and early evidence suggests they may be more contagious.

Here are some tips to stay healthy, according to the DC Department of Health:

  • Wash your hands often, using soap and water
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Avoid contact with those who are sick
  • Stay home when feeling sick
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw that tissue in the trash
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
