Hyattsville gym opens second women-only safe haven

Owner and coach of Her Flex Fitness is opening another gym that supports and empowers women in the DMV.

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — In honor of Women’s History Month, we want to highlight one of the only gyms in Prince George’s County – made by and for women only.

The gym is preparing to open the second location for Her Flex Fitness this weekend.

“I’ll give you three words,” said Alexis Anderson, who’s been with Her Flex Fitness gym for three years. “Empowering, transformative and I would just say overall just special to myself and the women that go here.”

Her Flex Fitness in Hyattsville is building a solid community for strengthening and conditioning. When you walk in and look around the gym you’ll quickly notice.

“I wanted to create a name that lets women know that this space is for you,” owner and coach, Samaiyah Williams said. “I really just wanted to have an outlet for women to come in, love on themselves, be selfish for an hour.”

Williams said it wasn’t easy creating this gym but just four years after starting her business she’s opening her second location, the first location opened in 2020 in Forestville.

“It was very hard to open up a women-only space,” Williams said. "You see oftentimes that the women-only gyms they open and then they close shortly after. I was like, OK, what can I do? That doesn’t happen.”

Williams said she got into fitness in 2016 and she was inspired to stay consistent when she was diagnosed with PCOS in 2012. The Richmond native honed in on her health and then moved to the DMV area and became a traveling trainer across Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.

“Being in unisex spaces, it’s just, it was a reliving to find this space where you really could come just be yourself,” Anderson said.

Williams said it’s more than just lifting weights, it’s also about women empowerment and community.

“She’s really dedicated to this, dedicated to the women in the community and dedicated to us being better,” Anderson said.

“I want to cater to my community,” Williams said. “I want to open up a space to where women can come in be themselves, be authentically themselves which is why you hear the hip hop and R&B, you see the girls who come in and workout with their scarfs on.”

Williams said she helps women workout consistently and focus on the right things to help them lose weight, tone and still maintain their curves. This gym allows women to be vulnerable when lifting weights. She hopes to continue to expand and create places like this where women can flex and learn to love yourself every rep of the way.

“It really is a blessing to really see my vision come into fruition because I knew there were a lot of women who need a space like this,” Williams said.

The grand opening for this new location in Hyattsville is Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at 7542 Annapolis Road. You can stop by and sign up or ask questions and support and find more on their website
