DC board of alcoholic beverage suspended Decades nightclub's liquor license

The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration determined that Decades presents an imminent danger to the health and safety of the public.

WASHINGTON — The popular D.C. nightclub, Decades, lost its liquor license as a result of a mass shooting that took place back in April.

The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCB) determined that Decades presents an imminent danger to the health and safety of the public. In a report issued by the ABCB, the board stated security failed to properly screen people for weapons entering the nightclub. This resulted in six people, including five staff members, getting shot.

On April 26, just before 11:30 p.m., security was alerted to an aggressive man located on the third floor of Decades. Security reportedly removed the man identified as, Rennwel Mantock, from the club. Security sat Mantock on the ground, at some point he stood up and reportedly pulled out a gun he had hidden in his waistband. He is accused of shooting between six and ten rounds, hitting the host, four security guards and one person waiting outside the club. Five of the six victims were taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.

Mantock ran away but was located and arrested by MPD shortly after. During the investigation, the MPD reviewed surveillance footage leading up to the shooting. The footage showed security doing gentle pat downs, but not patting down all areas where someone could hide a gun, including the waistband.

Decades has two metal detecting wands to screen attendees for weapons, but on the night of the shooting, they were not used, citing that they had not been working for at least two weeks because the battery had not been charged. Allowing Mantock to slip his weapon into the nightclub.

The board reviewed the nightclub’s security plan and it did not provide instructions for security on how to properly screen patrons for weapons before entering the nightclub, what to do if they find a gun, or how to handle people trying to enter the club with a gun.

It is unknown how long their license will remain suspended.
