DC Police video shows officers shooting stabbing suspect

DC Police have released body-worn camera footage from two officers involved in a shooting after an alleged stabbing of another officer in Northwest DC.

WASHINGTON — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has released body-worn camera footage from officers who were involved in a shooting that occurred on May 18 in Northwest DC.

According to a statement from MPD, three officers, a sergeant, and a Department of Behavioral Health team member were at an apartment complex on Virginia Avenue, where they had been responding to a welfare check.

In the video, released Friday night, officers are seen apprehending Jonathan Jefferson, 28, of Northwest DC.

Jefferson appears to break away from the officers after pulling a knife from his pocket. He reportedly struck an officer in the neck with that knife. The video shows officers then opened fire as Jefferson and another officer ran away.

At least nine gunshots can be heard, though it is unclear which officer fired the shots.

Jefferson and the officer who sustained a knife wound were transported to an area hospital, treated and released. Jefferson sustained a gunshot injury to the hand and a graze wound to the thigh, according to MPD. He was arrested on four counts of assault on a police officer, and the officers involved have yet to be identified.

MPD said the incident is being reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia (USAO) and will then be investigated by the MPD Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigation Team.

The video contains disturbing imagery and the sound of gunfire, so viewer discretion is advised.
