Fire at 6-story apartment building in Montgomery County caused by electric blanket

One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Five people have been displaced in Gaithersburg after an electric blanket sparked a fire late Tuesday night.

Crews with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded to a six-story apartment building, located at 333 Russell Avenue, around 11 p.m. after a report of a mattress fire. Once at the location fire officials say the fire was controlled by residential sprinklers.

Firefighters learned at the location that the fire was caused by an electric blanket in a bedroom of the home. Due to the fire five people were displaced. One of them were evaluated for smoke inhalation and another was taken to the hospital for an injury unrelated to the fire.
