Police: 22-year-old man under arrest for shooting, killing man in Takoma Park

The victim was found shot in the stairwell of an apartment building in Takoma Park.

TAKOMA PARK, Md. — Police have arrested and charged a 22-year-old man with murder for his alleged involvement in the shooting death of another man. Detectives have yet to determine a motive.

Wilmer Echenique-Navarro, of Capitol Heights, is charged with first and second-degree murder for his alleged involvement in the death of 40-year-old Derek Coleman.

On March 3, at 7:15 a.m., officers responded to the 6700 block of New Hampshire Avenue for a reported shooting. At the scene, officers located Coleman shot in the apartment building stairwell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After an investigation, detectives determined Echenique-Navarro as the suspect.

On April 15, police located Echenique-Navarro and took him into custody where he admitted to shooting the victim.

Echenique-Navarro is charged with first and second-degree murder and is in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
