Boy, 12, arrested for car, moped thefts in DC

Police say security camera footage played a pivotal role in identifying and charging the boy.

WASHINGTON — Police have arrested and charged a 12-year-old boy for a series of vehicle thefts across Northwest D.C. dating back to last year. Police say the boy stole two mopeds and two cars. All of the stolen vehicles have been recovered. 

Police believe the boy was involved in the following thefts:

  • On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at approximately 10:30 a.m., in the 3100 block of 14th Street, Northwest CCN 23095520 (moped)
  • On Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at approximately 5:30 p.m., in the 2900 block of 14th Street, Northwest CCN 23112221 (vehicle)
  • On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m., in the 3100 block of 14th Street, Northwest CCN 23120920 (moped)
  • On Saturday, January 6, 2024, at approximately 7:01 p.m., in the 3000 block of 14th Street, Northwest CCN 24003054 (vehicle)

The boy was arrested and charged Monday.  Police are still looking for additional suspects connected to these cases. Anyone who may have additional information for investigators should call police at 202-727-9099 or text the department's tip line at 50411.

Detectives say security camera footage played a pivotal role in identifying and charging the boy. Police want to remind residents of D.C.'s Private Security Camera Rebate Program.
