More and more car break-ins reported in this DC neighborhood

The man can be seen shattering a car window and attempting to break into several other vehicles.

WASHINGTON — Police are investigating a series of car break-ins in a Northeast D.C. neighborhood.

WUSA9 spoke to Rene Peace, who says she feels violated.

Last Thursday, she says a man broke into her car while she was sleeping and it's not the first time this has happened.

“It’s like someone was watching, like someone may have been watching me. This time he broke my window and went inside my car. I felt violated. Like, you’re going through my personal belongings.”

She lives in the 2400 block of 17th street in Northeast.

Her neighbor and retired DC police officer, Darin Burks, caught it all on camera.

The man in the video can be seen shattering Peace's car window and attempting to break into all her neighbor’s vehicles. Burks tells WUSA9, he caught the same man on camera last month.

“It’s unfortunate because, you never know. You can come out the house and attempt to scare him off and something can happen to you or to them.” Burks says.

DC Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Harry Thomas Jr., who lives in the same neighborhood, told WUSA9 they’ve all turned their evidence over to police but they’d like to see more action and more presence in the area.

“Some follow up and understanding, because they are repeat offenders. It’s the same people that come do this.” Thomas says.

According to police, between April 17 and 18th, there have been a total of 5 vehicle break-ins and over $10,000 worth of damage and stolen property in the neighborhood.
