Multiple shootings in DC leave 1 dead, 11 injured

The last weekend of 2023 was particularly violent in the District.

WASHINGTON — It has been another violent weekend in the District. Police say at least 12 people have been shot within the past 14 hours in D.C., with one reported death. 

The series of shootings are as follows:

Saturday:

At 12:06 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a call for a shooting in the 5000 block of Call Place, Southeast. At the scene, officers found a man who had been shot in the lower leg after an attempted burglary. Police say four suspects pushed their way into the apartment and began beating one person. Then, another person came to that victim's defense, and the suspects fled. That person followed the suspects outside, and was shot in the leg by one of the suspects. 

He was taken to an area hospital for further evaluation after the shooting. 

Several hours later, at 6:06 a.m., officers were called to Children's Hospital after a man who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds was dropped off there. Dekhota Evans, 18, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Further investigation revealed that after being shot in the rear alley of 501 Florida Avenue, Evans was taken to the hospital in a car by an unknown person. 

There is no word on any suspects at this time. 

At 3:04 p.m., officers were called to a Giant grocery store in the 1500 block of Alabama Avenue in Southeast for a report of a shooting. At the scene, officers found a man shot in the leg in the parking lot. Investigators say the victim was shot at by two suspects in a  grey Infiniti sedan. Officers were able to located two shell casings and one bullet fragment in connection to this shooting. 

Police have not yet identified any suspects of persons of interest in connection to the shooting.

At 4:32 p.m., a man was found shot in the 4300 block of Wheeler Road in Southeast. He is expected to recover. 

About an hour later, at 5:48 p.m., two men were found at a D.C. Fire and EMS station in Northeast suffering from gunshot wounds. They were transferred to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police found ammunition in the pants of one of the men, and was placed under arrest for possession of unregistered ammunition, according to an incident report. 

Police say the shooting itself occurred in the 1200 block of 49th Street in Northeast. 

At 7:36 p.m., officers responded to the 2800 block of Hartford Street, Southeast for multiple reports of the sounds of gunshots. At the scene, officers found a man who had been shot. He was rushed to an area hospital for help after the shooting. No suspects have been identified in connection with this shooting. 

At 8:10 p.m., officers responded to the 4600 block of Livingston Road after hearing rapid gunfire. While canvassing the area, officers found multiple shell casings in the street and were informed of a gunshot victim who walked into an area hospital for help after the shooting. 

The victim told police he had been struck by gunfire while walking toward the bus stop.

Police are on the lookout for two men last seen heading north on Livingston Road in a Black SUV in connection to the shooting. 

At 8:58 p.m., two people were walking on U Street when they were approached by two suspects in ski masks demanding their belongings. Police say one suspect pulled out a gun and took a victim's iPhone, Wallet, and keys. 

Both suspects were last seen running south in the 1900 block of 12th Street, Northwest.

Sunday:

At 12:58 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to the 300 block of 37th Street, Southeast for a report of a shooting. At the scene, officers found two teens who had been shot. Both were rushed to area hospitals for help conscious and breathing. 

About an hour later, at 1:50 p.m., another shooting involving a teenager was reported in the 1500 block of 19th Street, Southeast. That teen was also taken to an area hospital for treatment conscious and breathing.
