DC chef José Andrés receives Ukrainian Order of Merit

World Central Kitchen says it has served nearly 180 million meals in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began back in February.

KYIV, Ukraine — With so much heavy news in the world, we want to highlight a bright spot involving a D.C.-based chef.

World Central Kitchen's José Andrés has been awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two posed for photos at Constitution Square in Kyiv where there is now a plaque with Andrés' name.

World Central Kitchen says it has served nearly 180 million meals in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began back in February. On Twitter, they called the award "a huge honor."

Andrés posted a video message with Zelenskyy on his twitter page saying, "People of Ukraine this recognition... is not for me, but for you." Andrés said cold weather is already threatening people in Kyiv.

"But we are not afraid when such people like José, and the American people... When you are near us and you support us we are not afraid of this bad winter," Zelenskyy said.
