Former NFL player Vernon Davis talks with WUSA9's Wisdom Martin about his annual turkey giveaway

The former Super Bowl champ continues to make a difference in the DMV.

WASHINGTON — D.C. native Vernon Davis is a Super Bowl champion and a football legend in the DMV. He has also continues to be an important figure in the community through his charity work.

On Tuesday, he will host The Vernon Davis Foundation's 2nd Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway at Chase Skyland Town Center in Southeast, D.C., which is free to the public.

WUSA9's Wisdom Martin talked to Davis about why he is so involved in making a difference.

“I want to do this so I could create smiles and create space where people feel like they are important, because I do care," Davis said. "It’s always great to give back especially during this time of they year… It’s hard to put ourselves in a place where we don’t have anything. When I do this it’s to inspire and empower people to continue to do the right thing."

He continued by reflecting on growing up in the area, and a goal he made for himself at a young age.

“I grew up in Washington, D.C. so I know what its like to not have and as a kid I use to always tell myself, I'm going to make this community a better place.”

The free community event takes place at 2728 Good Hope Road Southeast, Washington, D.C. from 3:30-6:30 p.m.
