Memorial Day events blossom throughout the DC area

Floral displays commemorate those who gave their lives for their country.

WASHINGTON — Flowers in honor of those who lost their lives serving their country can be seen across the DC area from the National Mall to Arlington National Cemetery.

The USAA Poppy Wall of Honor on the National Mall commemorates over 600,000 service members who have given their lives since World War I in a striking display of red blooms behind a wall of glass.

At Arlington National Cemetery, volunteers are preparing for Flowers of Remembrance Day. The chance to lay a flower at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is just one part of the Memorial Day festivities at Arlington National Cemetery. Others include walking tours, history programs and the annual "Rolling to Remember" motorcycle ride.

The public may place flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
