WASHINGTON — More light and less heat. That’s Casey Nolen’s motto on any story he covers. He works to bring context and clarity to readers and viewers so they can be better informed about their communities, while wading through the sensational, so they don’t have to.

Since arriving at WUSA9, Casey has covered national political stories through a local lens, including: breaking news of the leaked Roe v. Wade opinion from Supreme Court, reports from the White House when local police officers were honored for protecting the Capitol on January 6, and local protests that shut down the Democratic National Headquarters.

Casey also thrives when covering what some might see as “smaller” stories, finding solutions for people who sometimes struggle to have their problems taken seriously.

While WUSA9’s journalistic history and community focus drew Casey to Washington, he is especially proud to be part of a team that leads with empathy and thoughtfulness, which is exemplified in its coverage of issues concerning mental health and stories involving the challenges young people are facing. Casey also has a passion for small business owners navigating the post-pandemic world.

Casey arrived at WUSA9 in 2022 from sister station KSDK in St. Louis, MO where he served as political editor, anchor, and MSJ (a multi-skilled journalist who can shoot and edit video in addition to reporting and presenting). During his time in St. Louis Casey also traveled overseas to cover three Olympic Games: London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016. He was dispatched to Haiti twice to cover St. Louis volunteers who assisted after the devastating 2010 earthquake and again 10 years later to document their lasting commitment to the people there. Casey was also at the center of the months-long social justice uprising in Ferguson, MO staring in 2014.

Casey’s reporting has earned several Emmy awards and multiple Edward R. Murrow awards. The Illinois Associated Press twice named Casey the “Best Reporter” in St. Louis and Chicago.

Casey also traveled to Pakistan in 2017 as part of a U.S. Department of State journalism exchange program to promote press freedoms.

While in Washington, Casey has volunteered with the Children’s Defense Fund. He enjoys running on the National Mall with his adopted dog Roni and hikes in Rock Creek Park with her, his other pup Mia and their mom (his brilliant bride Abby).
