Virginia police officer shoots 2 dogs attacking him during a welfare check, 1 euthanized

A 2-year-old male pit bull mix was euthanized as a result of the injuries. The second dog, a 7-month-old female pit bull mix, is expected to recover.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Two dogs were shot by a police officer in Prince William County Monday night, and one of the dogs had to be euthanized. The dogs attacked the officer while he was conducting a welfare check, according to police. 

Officers with the Prince William County Police Department responded to a home in the 13900 block of Telegraph Road in Woodbridge, Virginia, for requested a welfare check just after 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28.

When officers spoke to the man living in the house, two dogs, described by police as pit bulls, ran past the resident and charged the officer. One of the dogs bit the officer in the hip area and the other dog latched on to his vest, police said. The officer moved out to the front yard and shot his gun, hitting both dogs. 

Both of the dogs were taken to an animal hospital. One of the dogs, a 2-year-old male pit bull mix was euthanized as a result of the injuries. The second dog, a 7-month-old female pit bull mix, is expected to recover.

Rescue personnel arrived at the scene and treated the injured officer. No additional injuries or property damage were reported.
