DC to lift indoor mask mandate Monday, Mayor Bowser says

Certain areas in the District will still be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

WASHINGTON — Starting Monday, D.C. will lift its current indoor mask mandate, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday afternoon during a news conference.

Bowser said this step to end the indoor mask mandate means that vaccines are working and preventing people from getting severely ill and dying from the virus.

District residents, visitors and workers will be advised to follow risk-based guidance from D.C. Health for current health metrics and a person’s vaccination status, officials said.

Bowser also said this new order does not mean that everyone should stop wearing their masks. Certain areas in the District will still be required to wear masks regardless of vaccination status.

Here's a list of where masks will still be required:

  • Businesses that want to impose a mask mandate can keep that regulation
  • Public transportation and transit centers such as train stations and airports
  • Schools, childcare centers and public libraries
  • Congregate facilities, such as nursing homes/assisted living facilities, shelters, dorms/residences, and correctional facilities
  • D.C. Government facilities that have direct interaction such as the DMV service center and DHS service center.

D.C. Health officials said 88% of all D.C. residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. They still urge folks to consider the risks of the virus and to wear a mask and social distance if necessary.
