WASHINGTON -- The District of Columbia’s outdoor pool season officially starts Saturday – with all public pools and spray parks scheduled to open for the Memorial Day weekend.

The District’s 23 spray parks will remain open every day thereafter from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Outdoor pools operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation will open on weekends only until June 16.

This season also brings with it the reopening of the Langdon Park Pool and Spray Park following its $3 million renovation in 2018.

DC DPR also announced that this year 10 pools will have expanded hours by opening at 10 a.m. instead of 11 a.m.:

  • Anacostia
  • Banneker
  • Francis
  • Harry Thomas
  • Langdon
  • Oxon Run
  • Upshur
  • Kenilworth
  • Happy Hollow
  • Lincoln Capper

Citywide, there are more than 1,600 pools in the District. According to a WUSA9 analysis of data available through the DC Geographic Information System, the vast majority of those pools – more than 1,000 – are located in Ward 3.

In fact, Ward 3 has so many pools there’s one pool for every 82 people and more than 98 pools for every square mile of land.

Ward 3 has so many private pools it exceeds the count of all other wards in the District put together.

No other ward in D.C. comes even close. Ward 2 comes in a distant second with 251 pools – or a pool for every 310 people. Ward 5, with a population of more than 86,000 people according to Census data, has one pool for every 2,000 people. Ward 1 has one pool per 6,430 people.

As far as public pools go, D.C. is ranked among the top five cities in the nation for pool access per 100,000 residents. Every ward except Ward 3 has at least two public pools. Ward 7 and Ward 8 have seven and six public pools, respectively.
