Red Flag Warning meaning when it comes to weather

There are several factors taken into consideration before issuing a Red Flag Warning.

WASHINGTON — Several brush fires sparked across the DMV Wednesday evening. Earlier that day the National Weather Service issued Red Flag Warnings, but what exactly does that mean?

The National Weather Service says Red Fire Warnings are used to alert fire managers on federal lands to conditions that are highly unfavorable for prescribed burns that may lead to especially dangerous wildfire growth.

There are several factors taken into consideration before issuing a Red Flag Warning, including warm temperatures, very low humidities and stronger winds. These factors combine to produce increased fire risks and dangers.

During a Red Flag Warning, the National Weather Services suggests:

  • Not throwing cigarettes or matches out of a moving vehicle. They may ignite dry grass on the side of the road and become a wildfire.
  • If allowed to burn in your area, all burn barrels must be covered with a weighted metal cover, with holes no larger than 3/4 of an inch.
  • All outdoor fires should be extinguished properly. "Drown fires with plenty of water and stir to make sure everything is cold to the touch. Dunk charcoal in water until cold. Do not throw live charcoal on the ground and leave it."
  • Never leave a fire unattended as sparks or embers can blow into leaves or grass, ignite a fire, and quickly spread.
