PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — An overturned tractor-trailer caused delays on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway early Friday. U.S. Park Police shut down all southbound lanes past MD-201 near Kenilworth Avenue because of the crash. All lanes have reopened as of 8 a.m.
Park Police were called to the crash scene around 1:30 a.m. The crash happened on southbound BW Parkway at the Kenilworth ramp. The overturned tractor trailer spilled cargo onto the road, and police said the driver of the truck had minor injuries. Those were not considered life-threatening.
The westbound MD-202 entrance to the parkway was closed early Friday. The Kenilworth Avenue ramp to New York Avenue was also closed, police said.
Crews worked for several hours overnight to get the truck out of the roadway and clean up the trucks spilled cargo of produce. It's still unclear how the crash happened.
Police say it is illegal for tractor trailers to drive on the BW Parkway.
"Commercial vehicles are actually prohibited on all National Parks Service roadways within the Washington Metropolitan Area," said U.S. Park Police Sgt. Thomas Twiname. "That majorly includes the Baltimore Washington Parkway, Suitland Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway and Rock Creek Parkway."
Twiname said violators could face fines.
