Motorcyclist killed in hit-and-run crash in Dumfries

A police K-9 attempted to search for the suspect involved, but one was not located.

DUMFRIES, Va. — The driver of a motorcycle was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash in Dumfries, sparking an investigation into what happened.

Officers with the Prince William County Police Department responded to the area of Richmond Highway and Pine Bluff Drive just before 10:20 p.m. after a report of a crash involving a motorcycle. 

Through an investigation, they were able to determine that the person driving a 2023 Kawasaki Ninja 400R at a high speed going southbound on Richmond Highway, approaching Pine Bluff Drive. At the same time, a 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck was traveling northbound on Richmond Highway and entered the intersection in front of the motorcycle’s path. The truck and motorcycle then collided, throwing the rider off the bike.

The person who was driving the motorcycle, identified as 20-year-old Joseph Word, of Dumfries, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but later died.

The driver of the pickup truck drove away from the scene of the crash before police arrived. The tuck was later found unoccupied behind a nearby business. A police K-9 attempted to search for the suspect involved, but one was not located. 

The investigation into the case remains active and ongoing. Investigators with the Crash Investigation Unit are asking anyone who may have witnessed this crash or has information about those involved to contact police.
