Car crashes into woods in Gaithersburg, 2 hurt

Crash investigators believe the driver had a medical emergency.

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Police say two people are in the hospital after the car they were in went off the road and crashed into a wooded area in Gaithersburg Thursday morning. The crash blocked the exit ramp to Interstate 370 from Interstate 270 southbound, according to police in Montgomery County, for several hours. The ramp has since reopened.

Officers with the Gaithersburg Police Department were called to the exit ramp for a report of a collision just before 7:30 a.m. A preliminary investigation found that a single vehicle was exiting off I-270 for I-370 when it went off the road and crashed into the woods.

Montgomery County firefighters believe the driver of the car had a medical emergency, likely pressing on the gas at the same time. The passenger was trying to steer the car to avoid other cars on the road, and eventually went off the road and into the tree line.

Firefighters said both driver and passenger were hospitalized. One of them had traumatic injuries.

The crash investigation is still active and ongoing. Maryland State Police troopers are leading the investigation.
