Slow going on DMV roads during Wednesday morning commute

A closure on the Beltway caused huge backups across the region.

WASHINGTON — Wednesday's morning commute was snarled by a lengthy closure of northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 495 before Georgetown Pike (VA-193) in McLean. Traffic officials said the closure was due to late clearing road work, but it is not clear what work was being done.

The closure began before 5 a.m. and led to miles of backups. Lanes did not reopen to traffic until about 8 a.m., and residual delays lasted for several hours Wednesday morning.

In addition to the Beltway closure, an injury crash on Interstate 66 closed eastbound lanes before US 29 at Exit 52 in Fairfax County caused additional delays. Police have not offered more details about the crash, what led up to it, or the severity of the injuries reported. Lanes reopened once the crash was moved to the shoulder at around 6:30 a.m.
