New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The NFL suspended Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin one game without pay for a repeat violation of NFL safety rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players.
Griffin was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter of Sunday's game against Oakland for delivering a blow to the head of a defenseless receiver, Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera.
The violation was Griffin's second this season and fourth since 2011. All four violations were for striking defenseless players in the head and neck area.
Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Griffin's suspension may be appealed within three business days and an expedited hearing and decision can be requested in advance of Sunday's game.
The 5-6 Titans are one of six teams tied for the final Wild Card spot in the AFC. Tennessee heads to Indianapolis Sunday to take on the AFC South-leading Colts.
