Gonzaga College High School head football coach watches as two of his former players get drafted in the first round

"Being the number one pick in the NFL Draft, that’s ridiculous. Being a first-round pick and any pick is, boy that’s crazy, outstanding, otherworldly stuff."

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — Gonzaga College High School head football coach, Randy Trivers just got back to DC Friday evening after being at the NFL Draft in Detroit, Thursday. Trivers watched his former quarterback, Caleb Williams, get selected first overall by the Chicago Bears and watched from afar as his former left tackle, Olu Fashanu, got selected 11th overall by the New York Jets. Fashanu held a draft party with his family in Maryland.

“All indicators point to Caleb Williams being the first pick of the draft, Chicago Bears taking him, but until you really hear it and it’s real, there’s a little bit of nervousness," said Trivers. "Now it’s actually real, with the roar of the crowd. With the first pick of the draft. To see him come out with the lid, it’s an amazing feeling for sure.”

Coach Trivers’ flight landed Friday, but the butterflies are still flying.

“Being the number one pick in the NFL Draft, that’s ridiculous. Being a first-round pick and any pick is, boy that’s crazy, outstanding, otherworldly stuff," he said. “It’s just so rare. Sometimes we take things for granted...but, recognizing just how uniquely special this moment is.”

And recognizing two former teammates that Coach Trivers’ current roster can look up to.

“It’s inspiring to think, not necessarily that I’m going to be the number one pick in the draft, or the number 11 pick in the draft or the Heisman trophy winner, but what it means to be committed to something that you love and committed for people that you love," said Trivers.

He was there to see the start of a new chapter but can’t wait to see what comes next.

“The story has been fantastic, but there’s still more to be told," he said.
