NFL under fire for not allowing Chief's Dr. Duvernay-Tardif put 'MD' on jersey

The NFL missed yet another chance to move in the right direction away from the notion of being deemed the "No Fun League".

(WUSA 9) -- Chiefs lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif was looking to make history, with both a new jersey and another degree- but the NFL has reportedly denied that request.

Duvernay-Tardif graduated from medical school in May and is now the only active player with a medical doctorate.

Upon graduation, the doctor had one request as he returned to his full-time job, have "MD" added to the back of his jersey.

In the past, players only had their last names on their jerseys until Robert Griffin III was drafted in 2012.

He became the first NFL player to have a roman numeral on his jersey at the end of his last name and then many players began to follow suit to honor their families.

But the suffix addition had been exclusive to roman numerals, until what could have been now.

The NFL has since been under fire for what many believe could have been a move in the right direction for them.
