VERIFY: No, Nancy Pelosi did not remove 'In God We Trust' sign from House Chamber door

The architect of the Capitol has been fielding questions about the House Speaker and an imaginary sign after a fake news story ran amok.

WASHINGTON --

QUESTION:

Did Nancy Pelosi remove a sign reading, "In God We Trust" from above the external doors leading to the House chamber?

ANSWER:

Nope. It's fake news.

PROCESS:

Viewer Jim Tompkins from Petersburg, West Virginia asked the Verify team to find out whether an article was real.

The article comes from "Daily World Update," and it claims House Speaker Nancy Pelosi removed a 150-year-old sign above the House chamber that reads, "In God We Trust."

This article is flat out false.

Head over to the About page on Daily World Update and you'll find a telling description: "Everything on this website is fiction. It is not a lie and it is not fake news because it is not real. If you believe that it is real, you should have your head examined."

The site describes itself as a "network of parody, satire and tomfoolery."

We cross-checked with the Architect of the Capitol, they’re the federal agency responsible for maintaining the capitol grounds and preserving its history.

A spokesperson confirmed this photo is not of the Capitol. In fact, none of their doors remotely look like this. However, she pointed us to these two articles with an identical photo to the one used in this junk article.

Turns out, the man portrayed here is installing a sign on a Tennessee court house in Roane County. The photo was taken back in 2015 and is NOT of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

So we can Verify, no. This article is false.
