First shipping containers arrive at Port of Baltimore since bridge collapse

Gov. Wes Moore says 75 containers were transported by train after a cargo ship bound for Baltimore was diverted to New York.

BALTIMORE — Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced some slight progress during Thursday's media briefing as 75 shipping containers arrived at the Port of Baltimore. He said the containers were unloaded off of a ship in the Port of New York and New Jersey and transported by train to the Seagirt Marine Terminal. That ship was originally bound for Baltimore, but diverted due to last week's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

"To get things moving we have to get creative, and we have," Moore said, but noted it isn't a substitute for an active shipping channel. "This is not a permanent solution. The 75 containers that were moved today represents less than 5% of the average number of containers the port processes daily."

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott also announced $433,000 has been raised to create a special relief fund for victim's families.

The U.S. Coast Guard reported seven commercial ships are still stranded in Baltimore as crews continue to try and open a channel.

"First, we need to give closure to these families. Second, we need to clear the channel and open vessel traffic to the port," Moore said. "Third, we need to take care of all the people who have been affected by this crisis. And fourth, we need to, and we will rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge."
