WASHINGTON -- A sinkhole on George Washington Memorial Parkway has closed part of the northbound lanes while crews work to assess and repair the road.
The road is closed from Virginia Route 123, Chain Bridge Road to I-495, the Capital Beltway in the northbound lanes. The southbound lanes are still open.
The National Park Service, which manages the parkway, said the closure started at 6:45 p.m. on Friday when a U.S. Park Police officer saw the sinkhole.
NPS said they decided to close the road to “ensure public safety” but there have not been any accidents.
This is the second sinkhole in the area, next to Dead Run, this year. In March, the road washed away when an excessive amount of rain water inundated and broke a 60-year-old storm water pipe 10 feet underground.
Crews replaced that pipe and have not said what caused this sinkhole yet.
